27th Annual CSCST Conference review

This year's virtual 27th Annual CSCST Conference boasted about 100 delegates across 35 talks and 33 posters on the topic of Sustainable Energy and Manufacturing the Future.

The Society of Chemical Industry SCI Chinese UK Group and The Chinese Society of Chemical Science and Technology in the UK (CSCST-UK) held their 27th Joint Annual Conference on the 11th to 12th September 2020. The event was held online.

The theme of the event was Sustainable Energy and Manufacturing the Future. About 100 speakers and delegates from the UK, China, Germany, Poland Switzerland and Japan attended. There were 35 talks and 33 posters during the two-day conference, with lots of discussions and exchanging of ideas during the Q&A sessions. The discussions and talks were wide ranging covering renewable energy, green chemical processes, catalysis, advanced materials, batteries, fuel cells and digital technologies for manufacturing.

Dr Xiaolei Fan, Chairman of CSCST-UK, along with the conference chair Dr Chunfei Wu (Queen's University Belfast) opened up the proceedings. This was followed by the Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Warwick; Professor Sai Gu, who gave the first plenary talk titled “Transformation for A Century Old Chemical Engineering”. Professor Jun Huang from The University of Sydney, Australia gave the second plenary talk on his research on catalytic conversion in green chemical process, bio-refining, CO2 conversion and hydrogen production.

SCI’s Partnerships Executive, Bryony Parker, gave the SCI talk and introduced various career development, networking, scholarship and awards opportunities as SCI members. Dr Weiping Wu, Chairman of SCI Chinese UK group reviewed the historical SCI-CSCST partnership and  encouraged all to become SCI members also thanking SCI for its support.

Dr Xiaolei Fan announced winners of the best SCI-CSCST presentations. The winner of the 27th SCI-CSCST 2020 Oral Presentation awards were Dr Josh Bailey from University College London (1st Place Oral), Mr Yaolin Wang from the University of Liverpool (2nd Place Oral), Miss Rui Wang from Tianjin University (3rd Place Oral). The winners of the 27th SCI-CSCST 2020 Poster Awards are Dr Kailong Liu from the University of Warwick (1st pace Poster), Mr Shuming Zhang from Queen’s University Belfast (2nd pace Poster), Mr Yucheng Wang from the Northumbria University (3rd pace Poster Award).

Dr Xiaolei Fan also reviewed the recent development of CSCST, the new website, the joint effort to fight COVID-19, the outreach of CSCST with The Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China (CIESC) and GCCCD (Gesellschaft Chinesischer Chemiker und Chemieingenieure in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland e. V.).

The next CSCST conference which will be held at the University of Glasgow in 2021. Further information on the application procedure will be released in early 2021.
