Horticulture is essential to the UK’s economy, environment, and food security, yet the sector faces a well-documented skills gap. With growing demand for sustainable food production and green infrastructure, the need for skilled professionals has never been greater. However, shortages in plant science expertise and technical skills continue to hinder industry growth. Closing this gap requires a strong pipeline of well-trained graduates, making it crucial to assess and enhance higher education courses to better align with industry needs.
This meeting aims to elucidate and address issues across the sector with speakers addressing the skills, educational and knowledge issues essential for production, advisory, translation of research into practice, and research. The analysis of current UK Higher education provision will be presented and a a round table discussion will provide an opportunity for delegates to air ideas and suggestions on how we as a nation should proceed and structure education to support the horticultural industry.
This workshop is primarily designed to engage those in horticulture and agriscience industries, this includes growing, buying, selling, advisory or packaging.
Please note that this event is targeted at delegates who are active in relevant industry sectors and overall places will be limited. Therefore, SCI reserves the right to request additional information about a delegate’s experience prior to confirming their place.
