Alex McGowan is a 2019 Canada Student Merit Award winner. She achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of her class in the fourth and final year of her degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.

Alex McGowan completed her undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo in April 2019. As a part of the co-operative education program, she completed six work terms: two of these were in research, examining heterogeneous catalysis and reactor modelling for one term and then moving to combustion modelling and computational fluid dynamics for the second. The other four were in industry, with a focus on process safety and process engineering in the fertilizer manufacturing industry for both nitrogen and phosphate-based fertilisers at plants in Sarnia and Edmonton. Post-grad, she worked as a research assistant in combustion modelling before accepting a job offer in the risk assessment and loss prevention industry. She is excited to pursue a career in process safety and loss prevention moving forward.

When not in the lab or the office, Alex spends most of her time running, cycling, rock climbing, or enjoying good food to sustain her activities.
