International Workshop on Plasmas for Energy and Environmental Application

The International Workshop on Plasmas for Energy and Environmental Application (WPEEA-2016) was organised by the Technological Plasma Group at the University of Liverpool. It took place on 21-24 August 2016 at the Liverpool City Centre Holiday Inn. The workshop brought together people from academia and industry who are interested in the latest scientific and technological advances in core areas of emerging plasma technology for environmental clean-up and energy applications. It provided a cross-disciplinary platform for scientists and engineers to share ideas and experiences, to discuss future development and to promote collaboration. SCI’s Environment, Health and Safety Group attended the event and have provided a short report below.

The Environment, Health and Safety Group supported the International Workshop on Plasmas for Energy and Environmental Application in August 2016. On behalf of the group, Stopford Energy and Environment’s Director for Research and Environment, Dr Ben Herbert, attended the workshop and presented a paper.

Hosted by the University of Liverpool, with sponsorship from a number of international technology companies, the conference provided an engaging platform in which developments in plasma science were shared and industrial applications explored.

With around 100 delegates spanning the EU, east Asia, and the USA, the workshop explored plasma generation, plasma chemistry, and environmental/energy applications for plasma from both an academic and industrial perspective, with a number of technology case studies presented. With more and more empirical studies being conducted using plasma, reaction models being defined, and process feasibility being assessed, the opportunity for plasma in energy and environmental applications is clearly emerging.
