9 January 2024

Ling Zhang was awarded a Rideal Travel Bursary to attend UK Colloids 2023: An International Colloids and Interface Science Symposium in Liverpool, UK. Here she tells us about her research and her highlights from the conference. Read her report below.

Ling Zhang - Rideal Travel Bursary Award"I am a third year PhD student in Dr Dreiss' group at King's College London. My research focuses on the preparation of Pickering emulsions and their effect on lipid digestion. The research focuses on the physical combination of polysaccharide materials to stabilise Pickering emulsions, and the effect of Pickering emulsions on lipid digestion and absorption under in vitro conditions."

"It was a great experience to attend the UK Colloids 2023 conference in Liverpool, UK, 17-19 July 2023. An excellent platform for understanding the broader aspects of polymer and colloid science. The theme of the conference is designed in all aspects, such as rheology, bionics, nanostructure, emulsion and self-assembly, etc. Due to the wide range of conference topics, the conference venue is very grand and there are different sub-venues to listen to different interesting reports at different times. The content of the three-day conference was very fulfilling and interesting."

"This is the first time for me to personally participate in an international conference on colloids for doctoral degree. Listening to the wonderful speeches of the conference participants has broadened my horizons, and I have a deeper understanding of the materials and methods I use from different aspects, which has inspired me to achieve excellent results in my field. Exchange sessions with researchers and academics from all over the world are very rewarding. We shared many new ideas and I learned a lot about other people's work. Additionally I actively participated in conferences and presented my research during poster sessions. This led to many interesting discussions with other scientists at different stages of their careers, and I received a lot of valuable feedback."

"Overall, I really appreciate the opportunity to participate and present posters at UK Colloids 2023, and thank my team for their continued support. I would also like to thank the Rideal Travel Bursary and the RSC Researcher Development Grant for funding me to attend this conference, giving me the opportunity to participate in such an important conference."
